Rules

1. Name

The Club shall be called “The Remenham Club”.

2. Object

The object of the Club shall be the provision of a Social Club in Remenham Lane, Henley-on-Thames or elsewhere for Members of the following Clubs known as “Founding Clubs”, viz.:

  • London Rowing club
  • Thames Rowing Club
  • Twickenham Rowing club
  • Molesey Boat Club
  • Kingston Rowing Club
  • Staines Boat Club
  • Vesta Rowing Club

3. Qualifications for and Conditions of Membership

Membership shall fall into the following categories. Women shall be eligible for membership of the Club and all references in these Rules to men shall apply, mutatis mutandis, to women.

    a) Full

    b) Associate

    c) Honorary

    d) Competitor

    e) Guest

a) Full Members shall be those who are Members of their Founding Club and who have competed for that Club at Henley Royal Regatta or Henley Women’s Regatta or in such events as to indicate to the Committee a proficiency in oarsmanship. Applicants should have completed three years of competitive rowing for their Founding Club, except in the case of Henley Royal Regatta and Henley Women’s Regatta (eliminating races excluded) and of representation in a national crew at a F.I.S.A. Regatta when two years apply, and should have won a minimum of four status points.

b) Associate Members shall be those who are Members of their Founding Club but do not qualify for Full Membership provided that:

i) Their number shall not exceed twenty-five, or such other number as the Committee may from time to time decide.

ii) No one shall be elected unless the Committee in its absolute discretion is satisfied that the applicant has rendered exceptional service to his Founding Club and has been a Member thereof for not less than five years.

iii) The Proposer and Seconder shall be Full Members of the Club and the application supported by a recommendation of the Committee of the candidate’s Founding Club which shall include particulars of his exceptional services to that Club and of his period of membership. Associate Members shall not serve on the Committee or propose or second Full Members for service on the Committee. They shall pay the same entrance fee and subscription as Full Members.

c) Honorary Members may be elected at the absolute discretion of the Committee, but no one shall be so elected unless he has rendered especial service to rowing and the number of such Honorary Members shall not be significant in proportion to the total membership of the Club. Such Members will not be required to pay an entrance fee or subscription, shall not serve on the Committee or propose or second Full Members for service on the Committee nor be entitled to vote at General Meetings.

d) Competitor Members. Members of a Founding Club rowing for that Club at Henley Royal Regatta are entitled to free membership for the period of that Regatta and the preceding eleven days. Full Members so competing may, on application to the Secretary, have their current subscription repaid or waived.

Where a Founding Club has an associated Club the members of which are competitors at Henley Royal Regatta under the name of the latter Club then those competitors shall be entitled to Competitor Membership provided always that:

i) The members of the associated Club shall be bona-fide full members also of their Founding Club.

ii) The crew of the associated Club shall have been entered for the Regatta with the formal authority of that Founding Club.
Competitor Members shall not serve on the Committee nor propose or second Full Members for service on the Committee nor shall they be entitled to vote at General Meetings.

e) Guest Members may be nominated by any Member described in paragraphs a), b), c) or d) above and shall be Members for a limited period not exceeding two weeks. Such Members will not be required to pay an entrance fee or subscription, shall not serve on the Committee or propose or second Full Members for service on the Committee nor be entitled to vote at General Meetings, but shall pay the daily charges as provided for in the Bye-Laws for the time being in force. A book containing the names of all Guest Members for the time being shall be kept at the Club premises.

4. Election of Members

All candidates for Full, Associate, Honorary or Competitor Membership shall be proposed and seconded by Full Members or, in the case of Competitor Members, may be nominated by the Committee of the Founding Club of which they are Members.

All candidates for Guest Membership shall be proposed by Full, Associate, Honorary or Competitor members. Proposers and Seconders or the nominating Committee, where applicable, shall be responsible for the suitability of their candidates for membership. All Members shall be elected by the Committee and in every case at least two clear days shall elapse between application for membership and admission to the privileges of membership. All applications for membership (which shall be on the form specially provided for the purpose) shall be prominently posted in the Club premises for at least two days prior to election.

5. Cessation of Membership

a) Should a Full or Associate Member cease to be a Member of his Founding Club his membership of the Remenham Club shall thereupon terminate.

b) The Committee may, in their absolute discretion, notify any Member that he shall cease to be such, and in so doing, they shall not be bound to give any reason for their decision, and no such Member so expelled shall be introduced as a visitor at any future date.

6. Effect of Ceasing to be a Member

Any person on ceasing to be a Member of the Club shall forfeit all right to any claim upon the Club and its Property and Funds. Such a Member’s Share or Shares in the Remenham Club Ltd. shall be forfeited upon his ceasing to be a Member and he shall have no right to a refund of any Subscription or Entrance Fee.

7. Entrance Fee

Every application for Full or Associate Membership shall be accompanied by an Entrance fee of £30 or such other sum as the Committee may decide. Every Full or Associate Member shall, on election, be required to take up two 50p shares in the Remenham Club Ltd, and the sum of £1 included in the aforesaid Entrance Fee shall be applied in payment of the sum due upon their allotment.

8. Annual Subscription

The Annual Subscription shall be £30 or such other annual amount as the Committee may decide, and shall become due on election and in subsequent years on the first of February. If a Full or Associate Member resides outside of the United Kingdom for a full year or more and wishes to maintain his membership of the Club he may, on application to the Secretary, have his name placed on an Abroad List with a reduced annual subscription not exceeding £5 except that if temporarily in the U.K. during any part of June and July he shall be liable for the full annual subscription.

9. Admission of Visitors

On days other than regatta days, Members may, unless the Committee otherwise decide, introduce visitors free of charge. On regatta days, Members may introduce visitors on payment of such admission charges as the Committee may from time to time decide. Members introducing visitors on regatta or other days shall be responsible for their suitability and for any expenses or damage to Club property incurred or caused by such visitor.

No Member may introduce as a visitor any person who has been expelled from membership of the Club under Rule 5b.

Members of Founding Clubs and their Associated Clubs (see Rule 3d) who are competitors at Henley Royal Regatta but rowing for Clubs other than their Founding Clubs may be introduced as visitors at half the charge for such but the full Car Park charge shall be payable.
Members of Founding Clubs competing for their Founding Clubs or for other Clubs are entitled to introduce visitors at the current charges.

A Member introducing a visitor shall enter his name and that of the visitor in a book to be kept for that purpose on the Club premises. A visitor who is not entitled to Guest Membership may not purchase intoxicating liquor on the Club premises.

10. Committee and Officers

The Management of the Club shall be deputed to a Committee consisting of the President, Vice-Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer and two Members from each Founding Club. No person under the age of 18 may serve on the Commiittee.

The President and Vice-Presidents shall normally be appointed from Members who have given long service on the Committee. They shall be nominated by the Committee and after election at a General Meeting shall thereafter be eligible for re-election. The Vice-Presidents shall at no time exceed eight in number.

The Secretary, Treasurer and two Members from each Founding Club shall be elected annually by simple majority of the currently paid up Full Members present at the Annual General Meeting but casual vacancies amongst the Officers (other than the President and Vice-Presidents) and Members of the Committee may be filled by the Committee.

The Committee shall elect their own Chairman.

Notwithstanding Rule 3b and 3c there shall be no objection to the offices of Secretary and Treasurer being held by Associate or Honorary Members or to the two offices being held by one person.

11. Committee’s Resolutions

All resolutions by the Committee shall be approved by a majority of at least two-thirds of those present.

12. Quorum

Five Members shall form a quorum of the Committee.

At any Annual or Extraordinary Meeting of the Club 25 Members shall form a quorum.

13. Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the Club shall be held during the month of June or July and 21 days’ notice of the place, date and hour of such

Meeting shall be sent by the Secretary to every Full and Associate Member.

14. Extraordinary General Meeting

On receipt of a resolution signed by the lesser of one-fifth or ten of the Full and Associate Members and specifying the business which such Members wish to bring before the Club, the Secretary shall, within 28 days, issue to all Full and Associate Members a Notice convening an Extraordinary General Meeting to be held on a date not less than 14 nor more than 28 days after the issue of such notice.

Such Meetings shall have the power to deal with all matters specified in the requisition.

Only Full and Associate Members whose current year’s subscriptions shall have been paid shall be entitled to vote at General Meetings. Each Member shall have one vote given personally and not by proxy.

15. Amendment of Rules

These Rules may be added to, repealed or amended by Resolution at any Annual or Extraordinary General Meeting provided that no such Resolution shall be deemed to have been passed unless it be carried by a majority of at least two-thirds of the Members present and entitled to vote thereon.

16. Bye-Laws and Regulations

The Committee may, from time to time, make, repeal and amend all such bye-laws and regulations (not inconsistent with these Rules) as they shall think expedient for the internal management and well-being of the Club.

All bye-laws and regulations made by the Committee under this Rule shall be binding upon the Members of the Club until repealed by the Committee or set aside by a resolution of a General Meeting of the Club, passed by a majority of at least two-thirds of the Members present and entitled to vote thereon.

17. Interpretation of Rules

The Committee shall be the sole authority for the interpretation of these Rules, and the bye-laws and regulations made thereunder; and the decision of the Committee upon any question of interpretation or upon any matter affecting the Club, and not provided for by these Rules, or by the bye-laws and regulations made thereunder, shall be final and binding on the Members.

18. Intoxicating Liquor

The Committee or Members of the Committee so nominated shall be regarded as an elective Committee within the meaning of the Licensing Act, 1961, for the purchase and supply of intoxicating liquor who shall account only to the Members. Any gain or loss arising from the supply of intoxicating liquor shall be regarded as a benefit or detriment to Members of the Club as a whole to be dealt with by the Committee commensurate with the overall amenities provided by the Club.

The permitted hours for the supply of intoxicating liquor shall be those fixed from time to time by the Committee in accordance with the provisions of the Licensing Act 1964 as amended from time to time or such other licensing legislation and as notified where necessary to the Justices and as exhibited on the Club notice board and as published in the bye-laws of the Club.

No alcohol will be supplied to, or for consumption by, any person under the age of 18.

MEMORANDUM

1. The Remenham Club Limited, a Company incorporated on 3rd May, 1911, under the Companies (Consolidation) Act, 1908, is the owner of the property and all other assets of the Club.

2. The Company’s Articles of Association state, inter alia, that:

a) “The Committee” is equivalent to “The Directors”.

b) “Shareholders” has the same meaning as “Members” as do their respective Registers.

c) Any Member ceasing to be a Member of the Club shall forfeit his share(s) in the Company and such share(s) shall become the property of the Company.

d) The Committee shall not, without the consent of the General Meeting, consist of more than twenty or less than nine members.

e) Every Member of the Committee shall be the holder of at least one share in the Company.

BYE-LAWS AND REGULATIONS

1. Opening of the Club

The Clubhouse shall be open at the following times:
- During Henley Royal Regatta week and the week previous thereto, 9 a.m. to 11.30 p.m. daily.
- On the days of Henley Women’s Regatta and Henley Veterans’ Regatta, 10 a.m. to 7.30 p.m.
- On such other days and times as the Committee may decide.

The grounds are available for the personal use by Members on days other than the above but access to the Clubhouse is then only available by arrangement.

The Clubhouse and grounds are placed at the disposal of the Committee of Henley Open Events for their Sculls Head and their Fours Head and of the Committees of the Skiff Championships Regatta and of the Oxford and Cambridge Henley Races on the days of those events. Members wishing to attend on those “closed” days are required to pay such admission charges as may be required by those organisations.

2. Catering

Catering is provided on the days of Henley Royal Regatta only but Bar service is available on all “open” days.
On the days of Henley Royal Regatta, other than the Sunday, Members and their guests are not permitted to bring in their own food and refreshments and consume them in any part of the premises, grounds and car park.

3. Licensed Hours

Except on occasions when extensions are applied for and granted, the hours during which intoxicating liquor may be served on OPEN days to Members and on their order to Guests, under the terms of the Licensing Act 1964, shall be:

Weekdays (except Christmas Day & Good Friday) 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Sunday, Christmas Day and Good Friday 12 noon to 10.30 p.m.

4. Children

The regulations regarding the admission of children are:

a) Days other than Henley Royal Regatta days: Children may be admitted.

b) Henley Royal Regatta days:

i) No child of under eight years admitted on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday.
Members’ children under eight years admitted free of charge on Sunday.

ii) Members’ children of between eight and eighteen years admitted at half rates on all days.
Guests’ children of over eight years admitted at full rates on all days.

In no case will unaccompanied children be admitted to the Clubhouse and grounds. Members and guests are responsible at all times for the proper control of their children.

5. Vehicle Parking

Vehicles may be parked only in the Car Park unless specifically directed elsewhere in the grounds.

Owners and/or drivers must accept full responsibility for the safety of their vehicles and the contents of same.

The Club accepts no responsibility for motor vehicles and cycles left in the Club grounds and car park.

On the days of Henley Royal Regatta vehicles may be parked within the Club grounds only upon payment of a daily charge as fixed by the Committee. Such charge is normally payable in advance and no vehicle may enter or remain in the parking area unless displaying the Club’s car ticket for that day.

6. Dogs

Dogs are not permitted on the Club lawns or in the Clubhouse during the period of Henley Royal Regatta. On other “open” days dogs are only permitted provided that they are led at all times.

7. Seat Reservation

The reservation of seats and/or chairs by the leaving of hats, coats or other articles thereon is not permitted.

8. Lost Property

The Club accepts no responsibility for the loss or damage to articles belonging to Members, guests or visitors left in the Clubhouse, grounds or car park.

9. Music, Radios and Telephones

The use of radio, tape-recorder, gramophone or musical instrument of any kind whatsoever by Members or their guests whether in the Clubhouse or any part of the grounds and car park is prohibited on any “open” day.

In addition, the use of mobile phones is permitted only in the car park.

No electronically amplified music may be played within the Clubhouse or grounds on occasions that the premises are lent to Members or other organisations for their private parties unless specifically authorised.

10. Dress

Members, guests and visitors are expected to observe that standard of dress and decorum during Henley Royal Regatta which the Committee considers it necessary to maintain in order to ensure for all present the greatest enjoyment of the privileges and facilities available.

Persons not complying with those reasonable standards will be refused admission or, if present, requested to leave.

11. Club Property

The removal of glassware, chairs or other property of the Club beyond the boundaries of the lawns is prohibited.

12. Toilets

Only Members and staff specifically working for the Club may use the toilet areas of the Club for their morning ablutions prior to the opening hour on the days of Henley Royal Regatta. The showers may not be used during the remaining open hours of those days.

On the occasion of Henley Women’s and Veterans’ Regattas, the Henley Open Events Races, the Oxford and Cambridge Henley Races and other specified events the toilet areas of the Club may not be used as competitor changing rooms.

13. Admission Charges

The charges for the admission of Guest Members and/or Visitors shall be as fixed by the Committee in each year.
During the period of Henley Royal Regatta a Member’s wife and children of between eight and eighteen years may be admitted at one-half of those rates. This concession is allowed also on an All Five Days non-transferrable Badge which may be issued to a Member who is a widower or Consort’s widow.

Guest and Visitors shall wear their badges visibly at all times when attending the Club during the period of their validity.
