Remenham Challenge 2009

15 February, 2009 (20:50) | news

On Saturday 24th January the 2009 ‘Centenary Remenham Challenge’ was run on the Tideway reach of the Thames. A good turnout, reflecting the diversity of the founding clubs, from novice to veteran, turned up to race in 8’s for the 2009 pennant on a bitterly cold afternoon.

Uniquely, this year – for a great many of the ‘non veteran’ participants, it was run on an incoming tide – a somewhat different perspective and course to most Tideway events. Starting at Hammersmith Bridge and raced to Chiswick Bridge. This caused a few challenges for coxwains, most notably in fact for those from Tideway clubs who should have known better about the infamous green buoy outside the White Hart pub at Barnes and the corresponding bend at Barnes bridge!

Congratualtions to the Remenham pennant winners:

  • Mens: London – C Maw, I Cowell, O Mahony, C Dunley, A Cawthorne, A, Berridge, D Wilson, A Calvert-Ansari. (cox: H Burke)
  • Womens: Thames
  • Novices: Vesta
  • Veterans: Thames

Special mention should be made to thank Quintin Eights Head, who supported the running of the Remenham Challenge within their event, as well as the PLA who allowed for the Quintin Eights Head entry to be expanded to cope with the Remenham clubs. This arrangement was a reflection of the operating and safety constraints required for Tideway events of such size as the Remenham Challenge. In advance of the ‘2010 Remenham Challenge’, hosted by Vesta, we will be looking to work with the key parties to reach the best conclusion for all of the clubs involved.

As a further celebration of the Remenham Centenary in 2009, we will be aiming to hold a ‘Challenge Fours’ event in the Autumn, to be held on the Henley reach. More details to follow shortly.
